ATB branches and 4-H members, clubs, and districts across Alberta partnered together for the fifth annual year to compete for an opportunity to host a 4-H District community concert headlining Gord Bamford, renowned Canadian country music star.

Some outstanding audio visual contest submissions were received this year. The winner of the 2014 “Why 4-H is Great” community concert is Drumheller 4-H District. Second place finalist was the Ponoka 4-H District. This year entries were required to highlight “Why 4-H is Great” or “Why 4-H loves Alberta”.

Drumheller 4-H District’s fabulous grand prize will be to host the 2014 Gord Bamford community concert on Friday, November 21 at the Badlands Community Facility in Drumheller, Alberta.

The concert will serve as a fundraiser for their local 4-H District, with 15% of the concert proceeds being contributed to the 4-H Alberta Legacy Fund. All members of the Drumheller 4-H District will also receive a private Gord Bamford mentoring session on the day of the concert.

1500 tickets are available for purchase for $25.00 each through a Drumheller 4-H District Member or at the following local ATB Financial branches and agencies: Linden; Drumheller; Hanna; Strathmore; Three Hills; Trochu; Carbon; Morrin; Rockyford; Standard; Delia; Irricana; Big Valley.

In addition to this valuable fundraiser, the “Why 4-H is Great” contest also proudly showcases some of the outstanding local 4-H musical talent each year. This year’s winner of the Musician’s contest is The Cats and the Fiddles.

Thank you to ATB Financial and Gord Bamford for continuing to make this contest a success and a highlight of the 4-H Alberta program. Over the past five years, in excess of $68,000 has been raised for 4-H Alberta through this contest!

Calgary Stampede 2014 Youth in Action Showcase Recap!

The Calgary Stampede has come and gone for another year and a highlight during all of the excitement, the Youth in Action Showcase has concluded.

During this year's July 4 - 11th Calgary Stampede, an area of the Agriculture Building was transformed into an engaging and energetic 4-H Showcase. 4-H members had the opportunity to interact with Stampede guests from around the world and showcase their 4-H talents, projects and knowledge. This year members showcased their poultry, swine, horse, and rabbit 4-H Projects, to name a few of the diverse projects and activities that were on display.

In addition, the Calgary Stampede generously provided 4-H Alberta with a display booth for the entire seven days. This opportunity allowed 4-H Alberta to interact with youth and families and inform them about 4-H and the benefits of being part of this great program.

To add a little more attraction to the 4-H Alberta booth this year we included sack races and hula hoop competitions for the kids, a straw bale couch for families to relax on, lego tables (to showcase one of our many projects) and the “Wall of Cleaver”, which showcased art work of Cleaver at our booth.

Kids’ Day was held Wednesday July 9th, which for the 4-H booth, was a highlight of this year’s events.  The 4-H Alberta booth face painted 50 little faces and collected more than 150 coloring pages to help decorate the “Wall of Cleaver”!

Of course the Youth in Action Showcase would not have been as successful for the 4-H Alberta booth if it had not been for all the hard working volunteers who helped man the booth throughout the week. A big thanks to Elaine Manor, Lorraine Parkinson, Heather Pfeil, Bailey Pfeil, Raina Irons, Arlyn Bouchard, Oliver Mcateer, Siera Burg, Cathy Price, and face painters, Heather Ayles and Candace Knull, for their dedication and contributions. Thank you to everyone who stopped by! Hope to see you next year!

CAPL: Enhancing 4-H Alberta Programs for 10 Years!

For the past ten years, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen (CAPL) has partnered with 4-H Alberta to maintain a meaningful relationship with the mutual goal of enriching the 4-H experience for members across the province. Through their sponsorship of the 4-H Alberta Communications program at the Regional level, CAPL helps 4-H members to develop and strengthen valuable communication skills. CAPL is one of 4-H Alberta’s valued provincial program sponsors who make it possible each year for youth from all around Alberta to attend life development camps and excel as individuals as they enter into adulthood. In addition, CAPL sponsors two separate 4-H scholarships that are given each year.

CAPL was first established in 1948. Today, with a current membership in excess of 1,500 individuals, the Association is well represented in the Canadian oil and gas industry. The Association provides networking opportunities and educational resources, materials, and programs to educate, inform and promote professionalism within its membership. The CAPL activities interface with other resource-based associations, government departments and the public to facilitate common understanding of the issues, problems and solutions in the management of the oil and gas industry.

Each year, CAPL purchases the Reserve Champion steer at the Calgary Stampede Steer Classic show. A side of beef serves as the top prize for two raffles, along with other great prizes, all proceeds form part of the total sponsorship provided by CAPL to 4-H Alberta. We were very excited to announce for the first time that 2014 was a complete sell out of raffle tickets. Thank you to everyone who helped sell and purchase tickets this spring!

On behalf of 4-H Alberta, the 4-H Foundation of Alberta would like to once again extend thanks and gratitude to CAPL for its annual financial contribution! We are excited to announce that this is our 10th Anniversary with this amazing organization devoted to youth and our program. We look forward to the next 10 years!
