UFA Credit program

Starting this year UFA has created a new program to help 4-H Alberta members learn about financial responsibility and budgeting. This program has replaced the 15% discount that was previously offered by UFA.
UFA have launched a new accounts program which will allow 4-H Alberta members to open an account with UFA that will help them to purchase all the necessary tools, equipment, and feed that they need to complete and work with their 4-H projects throughout the year. At the end of each 4-H year they will then pay off the account. The account will be interest free until July 31st, 2016. This new account system will help 4-H Alberta members to build more life skills as they learn to manage their money and budget their spending as they work on their project throughout the year. This unique opportunity will allow 4-H members to begin to handle their own finances and learn about the business side of their marketable livestock projects.

STARS- 4 Ways to Fundraise!

Since 1990 4-H clubs across Alberta have come together to fundraise for STARS.Together 4-H members have raised over $900,000 to ensure all Albertans have access to life-saving transport.

VIP Story

Lorenz Entz

Hometown: Drumheller, AB

Twelve-year-old Lorenz would rather work than play around. It was this hard working nature that took him to the mechanic shop on the Cloverleaf Hutterite Colony on one sunny Saturday afternoon in May.

He was tasked with cleaning the truck wash. When he was finished he was to close the electric overhead garage door. However, a piece of pipe had fallen into the door’s track and would not let it close properly.

When Lorenz pushed the open button again, his arm got caught and he was pulled 16 feet to the ceiling until the door stopped.

His screams brought the attention of another boy who ran for help. By the time help arrived, Lorenz had fallen to the ground, his arm still caught above in the door.

As his father, Joe, prepared to take him to meet a ground ambulance from Drumheller, others on scene got Lorenz’s arm from the door. STARS met the ground ambulance in Drumheller and took him to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary.

Thanks to rapid transport, surgeons were able to successfully reattach his arm in a nine-hour surgery.

Today Lorenz has regained much use of his arm and continues to recover from the incident.

“We will forever be grateful to have STARS in the sky,” said Joe. “Thank you STARS for your quick response.”

Animal Auctions

Every year, Alberta 4-H clubs, members and leaders help fundraise for STARS through charity auctions of steers, calves and sheep, or via other animal-related projects. As a club, you share the responsibilities of raising a charity animal from start to finish and then you can donate the proceeds from the auction of that animal to STARS. Some clubs choose to auction the charity steer more than once to raise more funds. Alternatively, some clubs choose to donate a portion of the proceeds of each animal auctioned to STARS.

STARS Calendar Sales

Starting this year, from July 2015-February 2016, 4-H members can sell STARS calendars and receive a commission on each calendar sold. The annual STARS Calendar Campaign is in its 21st year and raises millions of dollars with many moving patient stories of rescue and recovery and photos of our STARS team in action. You can help STARS fundraise through calendar sales and your club will also benefit by receiving $6 per each calendar sold. Get in touch with us to arrange for calendar supplies.

STARS Red Ring for Life

We all share a degree of separation from STARS. One in ten Albertans knows a patient or was a patient. How many degrees of separation are you?

Show your pride in being part of the STARS team and support our life saving mission by wearing a Red Ring for Life. The ring is a symbol of the many hands involved in a life-saving mission and is worn by supporters, donors, former patients and members of the chain of survival. With a minimum donation of $5 per month for one year, or a yearly donation of $60, you will receive your stainless steel ring.

STARS Fund a Flight

You can help keep STARS in the sky when you fund one of our vital flights. Life can change without a moment’s notice – from a farm accident or a heart attack to a car crash. Your support is critical to our ability to save lives.

A donation of $5400 will help make one patient’s mission possible – this includes the medical and aviation crew, as well as the necessary medical supplies and helicopter fuel needed. This donation is equal to one dollar per second for an average 90 minute mission. When the mission you helped fund has been completed, you will receive a STARS Certificate of Support and information about the mission your donation funded.

About STARS

STARS is dedicated to providing a safe, rapid, highly specialized emergency medical transport system for the critically ill and injured. In our 30th year, we have flown over 30,000 missions since 1985, including 1,839 missions in Alberta last year. On board, patients are always cared for by a STARS flight nurse and flight paramedic team. A transport physician accompanies the patient when required, and are always available for consultation through telephone or radio link.

When seconds count and the mission is critical, timely and accurate sharing of information is vital to the patient’s outcome. To meet this need, the STARS Emergency Link Centre (ELC) is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by a team of highly skilled Communication Specialists. The STARS ELC facilitates communication between the helicopter-based crew and external organizations such as ground ambulance, fire services and hospital staff. The STARS ELC also manages requests for deployment of helicopters, monitors the helicopter while in flight and coordinates landing zone preparation prior to their arrival.

For more than half the population of Western Canada, access to critical care is measured in hours. That can mean the difference between life and death; full recovery or permanent damage. STARS offers time, hope and live-saving transport to critically ill and injured patients. STARS is a charitable, non-profit organization and funding is met through donations from individuals, service groups, businesses and corporations, municipalities and through collaborative agreements with the provincial government. The incredible support of the community helps us continually enhance our innovative and leading-edge air medical programs and service.

Your support ensures that STARS can be there for the next patient.

I.T.S. Travel & Cruise 4-H Booking Program

FREE Money for Your 4-H Club

Parents, grandparents, leaders, friends and neighbors, can all help raise funds for your local 4-H Club each time they book their travel arrangements through Select Holidays & I.T.S. Travel & Cruise. This includes air flights, vacations packages, cruise vacations, travel insurance, cars, hotels and more.....
Upon making a booking, all patrons can then specify which local 4-H Alberta club they wish to benefit as a result of using Select Holidays & I.T.S. for their travel arrangements.
The amount of services and travel purchased will then determine the financial support going back to the patron's 4-H Alberta club of choice, and the 4-H Foundation of Alberta.

I.T.S. has committed to following financial dollars, based on booking amounts, to be forwarded to local clubs and the 4~H Foundation of Alberta:

· Up to $1999 receives $25.00 per person
· $2000 - $4999 receive $50.00 per person
· $5000+ receive $100 per person

How to use the Booking Program

1. Anytime throughout the year, book a flight, car, hotel, etc. by contacting I.T.S. Travel & Cruise:

I.T.S. Travel & Cruise
Lynn Holinski
5056-50th St.
Innisfail, AB T4G 1S7
Phone: 1.877.227.4348
email: lynn@itstvl.com

2. Upon booking, state the 4-H Club you would like to receive the financial benefit from your booking. 75% of the financial support based on the booking amounts listed above will go directly to the club you specify; the remaining 25% will go to the 4-H Alberta Member and Leader Travel Fund.
3. Quarterly, the 4-H Foundation will forward funds provided by I.T.S. Travel & Cruise via EFT to applicable 4-H clubs.

For Example: Joe Smith from Blufton, AB calls into I.T.S. Travel and books a trip for him and his wife totalling $2,100.00 each, or $4,200.00 total for them both.

I.T.S. Travel & Cruise asks Joe Smith if there is a local 4-H club he would like to direct his bookings support to. Joe Smith specifies that he would like the Rimbey 4-H Canine Club to benefit.

Because Joe's trip costs $2,000.00 a person, $100 is able to be provded back to 4-H Alberta. 75% of that will be directed to Joe's specified club (Rimbey 4-H Canine Club) and the remaining 25% will go to benefit the 4-H Alberta Member and Leader Travel Fund. In other words, $75 will go to Rimbey 4-H Canine Club and $25 will be directed to the 4-H Alberta Member and Leader Travel fund.

Funding 4-H Alberta Projects

Funding 4-H Alberta Projects

ATB and UFA working together to support youth

Calgary, AB - ATB and UFA have created a joint loan and credit program to help support 4-H Alberta members with their yearly projects. ATB Financial will loan money to 4-H youth for the purchase of marketable livestock—beef, swine, sheep, meat goats and horses—or other approved projects. UFA will extend credit for supplies and feed for the project.

This is a great opportunity for youth to establish credit and understand how to borrow money responsibly. It’s never too early for the leaders of tomorrow to learn about financial responsibility. To apply for UFA credit, visit http://www.ufa.com/aboutUFA/youth.html and fill out the application form. ATB Financial’s applications can be found at http://www.atb.com/business/agriculture/agriculture-borrowing/loans/Pages/4-h-loan-program.aspx .

UFA and ATB believe in giving back to our communities and investing in our youth because it provides our neighbours a great place to live, work and play.

4-H Alberta Selected as Participating Charity in the Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink charity initiative

4-H Alberta has been selected as one of the participating charities in the 2015 Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink (BFK) program as part of the Shaw Charity Classic tournament. Held annually in Calgary since 2013, the Shaw Charity Classic has been a widely successful event, engaging thousands of volunteers and raising several million dollars for charity. The Birdies for Kids program is administered through the Calgary Shaw Charity Classic Foundation and focuses on supporting charities that benefit children and youth.

In light of the recent economic difficulties in Alberta, the Birdies for Kids program has expanded the tournament’s charitable portfolio during 2015 to support even more charities in an effort to provide relief during a tough fundraising year. BFK will support over 90 charities in Alberta this year.
Since 2013 the tournament has raised over $4.67 million for charities in the province. 100% of all donations raised through the Calgary Shaw Charity Classic Foundation will be contributed directly back to the selected Birdies for Kids charities. In addition, Birdies for Kids offers a matching pool, wherein up to 50% of a donation will be matched.

“The motto for the Shaw Charity Classic is ‘Helping Kids. Changing Lives.’ Funds raised on behalf of 4-H Alberta will certainly fit with this mandate, as 4-H Alberta will use any dollars we receive to help directly enrich the 4-H experience for youth in Alberta. We would like to thank the Shaw Charity Classic Foundation and AltaLink for including 4-H Alberta in this program during 2015,” says Bruce Banks, CEO, 4-H Foundation of Alberta.

Birdies for Kids is a program designed to aid in raising funds for local charities, engage the community in the tournament, and provide matching funds for each charity involved. The program itself acts as a partnership builder between donors and charities, as all money will flow through the Calgary Shaw Charity Classic Foundation towards Alberta charities.

For more information about the event, or if you would like to get involved as a donor, please visit http://shawcharityclassic.com/birdies-for-kids.php.

Thank You CAPL for Hosting the Spring Barn Burner to benefit 4-H Alberta!

Over the past 10 years the Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen (CAPL) has raised over $134,000 for the 4-H Foundation of Alberta through its annual Steer Classic Raffle. In 2015 CAPL tried something new – and it was wonderfully successful!

4-H Alberta is thrilled with the results of the first annual CAPL Spring Barn Burner, an outstanding event from start to finish. The evening was full of dancing to great country music by feature act, Aaron Pritchett and special guests Tanya Ryan and Lyndsay Butler. This brand-new fundraiser was a fun CAPL event that simultaneously raised dollars for 4-H Alberta!

Thank you to CAPL for all of its fundraising efforts; over $20,000 was raised from the 2015 Spring Barn Burner! A special thank you to the 2015 CAPL Barn Burner Committee for doing such an amazing job with planning, organizing, and making this event possible. Funds raised as a result of this year’s fundraiser will be contributed to CAPL’s areas of support within 4-H Alberta: 4-H Alberta Regional Communications, 4-H Alberta Summer Camping, 4-H Alberta Club Week, and two separate 4-H Alberta Scholarships, annually.

Thank you to all who purchased tickets and came out on May 7th to Cowboys Dance Hall in support of this event. Thanks to the generosity of our dedicated Corporate Partners, such as CAPL, and the community, 4-H is able to continue enriching the lives of young people all across Alberta.
